Business Model Canvas Helper

Build a Business Model Canvas block by block with a client — or read a finished one for insight, planning direction, and KPIs.

What you get

Two modes. Build: it asks for the type of business, what's offered, and where, then works all nine blocks in order — Customer Segments, Value Propositions, Channels, Customer Relationships, Revenue Streams, Key Resources, Key Activities, Key Partnerships, Cost Structure — asking rather than guessing when an answer is thin. Analyze: hand it a filled canvas and it returns category-by-category insights, planning direction, and KPIs tied to each block.

Conversation skill. You start it by saying what you want; it asks for what it needs and hands back a deliverable in the same chat. Nothing to install beyond the plugin, nothing to configure.

What it never does

  • Never compresses, renames, or drops a block — the nine-block framework is kept as is.
  • Never fills a block with a guess; it asks the client.

What to have ready

Step 2

Setting it up

Getting it on your side

The skill is plain instructions, so it runs wherever you already work. Pick your row:

  1. Get the files: everything is in the public GitHub repository — the skills themselves, and the ready-to-install plugin file on the latest release. MIT licensed; no GitHub account needed to download.
  2. Claude desktop app: download sbdc-toolkit.plugin from the latest release, drag it into a chat, click Accept.
  3. ChatGPT: this skill is a plain Markdown file, not Claude-specific. Open skills/business-model-canvas-helper/SKILL.md, copy the whole file, and paste it into a ChatGPT Project’s instructions or a custom GPT. Same instructions, same outputs.
  4. Claude Code: /plugin marketplace add bwfnx/sbdc-toolkit then /plugin install sbdc-toolkit@maryland-sbdc

Your first conversation

Open a new chat and say:

Help my client build a Business Model Canvas for their [business].

It will ask for:

  • Type of business, products or services, location — then one block at a time.

Step 3

How to use it

Say

Let's build a Business Model Canvas from scratch. Here's the client's canvas — what does it tell us and what KPIs should they track? We're pivoting — rework the canvas.

What comes back

  • Build: the completed nine-block canvas.
  • Analyze: insights per block, planning direction, and KPIs.

Then

  • Take the canvas into TAM/SAM/SOM for market sizing or into a business plan.

Tips from the field

  • Do it live in the meeting — the questions are the value; the canvas is the record.
